What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium screws which are inserted into your jawbone to serve as an artificial root when replacing a missing tooth. Your new prosthetic tooth, consisting of a dental crown, will rest on a titanium abutment that gets attached to your implant. If you are a suitable candidate, dental implants will provide you with the most effective permanent solution to replace missing teeth.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

In order to be a suitable candidate for dental implants, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You have sufficient bone density in your jaw to accommodate the implant
  • You must be willing to invest the 3-6 months it takes to complete the dental implant procedure
  • You do not have periodontal disease
  • You do not have any health conditions which may adversely impact your ability to heal

At your initial consultation, Hoboken implant dentist Dr. Frank DePaola will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether you are a candidate for dental implants. If not, she may recommend alternatives such as dental bridges or dentures to replace your missing teeth.

What is osseointegration?

After your dental implant is inserted, it will take approximately three to six months for your jawbone to heal. During this time, the implant will fuse with your jawbone, becoming a permanent replacement root. This process is called osseointegration. Once osseointegration is complete, Hoboken implant dentist Dr. Frank DePaola will attach the abutment to your implant and complete the procedure by placing your prosthetic tooth on the abutment.

Will I need a bone graft as part of my dental implant procedure?

In order to be a candidate for dental implants, you must have enough jawbone density to support the implant. If you lack sufficient bone structure, you may require a bone graft in order to successfully complete the procedure. However, patients with good bone structure in their jaw will not need a bone graft as part of their dental implant procedure.
