What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium screws which get inserted into your jawbone to replace your missing tooth root. They are attached to a titanium post, called an abutment, which will house your new prosthetic tooth, made out of a dental crown.

Depending on your needs, dental implants can be used to replace one missing tooth, or they can be used to attach to dentures for additional support when replacing multiple teeth. During your consultation, Dr. Frank DePaola will review all of these options with you in detail.

The amazing benefits Dental Implants

There are many advantages to choosing dental implants over alternatives such as dentures or dental bridges. Some of these benefits include:

  • Improved comfort – Dental implants fuse with your jawbone, making them a permanent restoration. This eliminates much of the discomfort associated with removable dentures.
  • Improved appearance – Your dental implants will look and feel like your natural teeth, blending in seamlessly with your smile.
  • Improved eating ability – You will be able to eat all of your favorite foods without concern.
  • Improved speech – Dentures often slip, causing difficulty speaking. Dental implants eliminate this embarrassing issue, making it easy to pronounce words clearly.
  • Improved oral health – Your adjacent remaining teeth will not need to be altered to support the implant as is necessary with dental bridges or dentures, improving your long term oral health. Dental implants also prevent the jawbone from shrinking, preserving more of your natural bone structure.
  • Durability – With proper care, your dental implants can last for the rest of your life.
  • Convenience – The permanent nature of dental implants eliminates the hassles associated with removing your dentures for cleaning.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you are in good general health and are free of chronic, unmanaged medical conditions like diabetes, you may be a good candidate for dental implant treatment. Your treatment begins with a thorough consultation in which your dentist will review your medical history and lifestyle habits. A comprehensive examination and dental imaging will provide information regarding structural issues that may need to be addressed before you can undergo the dental implant procedure. For example, if you have gum disease, your dentist will work to bring that condition under control before scheduling your implant treatment. The care that is taken before treatment minimizes risks and supports long-term function.

What is Osseointegration in Dentistry?

Osseointegration is the term that describes the fusion of bone around a biocompatible structure. After your dental implant procedure, your gums will be stitched over the implant or implants so they can sit undisturbed for several months. During this time, your bone tissue, which is always regenerating, gradually encases the implants. Approximately six months after the implant is inserted into the jawbone, it should be fully fused to the bone and fully stable, just like a natural tooth would be.

Can I Get a Dental Implant without a Bone Graft?

Having a solid foundation is essential to the success of your dental implant process. If you lack sufficient bone density, as determined by your intake examination, your dentist may recommend ridge augmentation via a bone graft. The development of bone grafting has been a major advancement in dental implant treatment. Previously, if you had insufficient bone height and density, you would not be a good candidate for this treatment. Now, using one of a variety of grafting materials, the dentist can enhance the bone to such a degree that dental implants can gain full stability, and maintain that stability for several years. That said, if you have good quality bone structure, you may be able to undergo the dental implant procedure without bone grafting.

How Long Does a Dental Implant Procedure Take?

Each dental implant takes one to two hours to insert into its precise location. If you are receiving multiple implants at one time, your dentist will discuss how long you should expect to be in the office. To help you feel the utmost comfort during your dental implant procedure, you may choose to add dental sedation to your treatment. We offer three types of sedation dentistry, each of which has been proven safe and effective. In addition to the option of sedation, we are committed to maintaining patient comfort through the use of local anesthetic as needed during longer procedures.

How Long Does a Dental Implant Last?

Because your dental implant or implants will become encased on bone tissue, they can last indefinitely. It is important to understand that your personal responsibility to your long-term treatment outcome is to take very good care of your teeth and gums. Like your natural teeth, your dental implants are stabilized by strong, healthy gum tissue and bone. These structures can degrade if you develop periodontal disease and do not receive appropriate care to manage the infection. We are here to help you take the best care of your teeth and dental implants! If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
