Exceptional Quality Dental Fillings

The Practice at Maxwell Place is a metal-free practice. Advances in dental materials offer you options that are safer, more durable, and more natural looking than metal fillings. Metal fillings can expand and contract with temperature changes, potentially resulting in tooth fracture. They can also turn your teeth dark and gray, marring the appearance of an otherwise beautiful smile.

What kind of dental Fillings are offered?

Dr. Frank will use either ceramic or composite fillings to address your tooth decay. This allows for greater conservation of tooth structure while providing you with a durable, long lasting restoration. Dr. Frank will restore the tooth back to its original shape utilizing materials that mimic the natural layers of your tooth. He will apply these materials layer by layer for a beautiful, natural looking result.

For larger areas of tooth decay, Dr. Frank may recommend porcelain inlays and onlays for more effective results. Porcelain inlays are effective for cavities that reside within one cusp of your tooth, while porcelain onlays are used when the decay extends beyond one cusp.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are typically performed on people of any age, and as early as four or five years of age in children to prevent cavities. Most patients who have small cavities or early signs of tooth decay can easily restore the health and function of their teeth with dental fillings. However, if your dentist determines that too much bacteria has damaged the tooth before the time of your appointment, it may be too late for a dental filling to resolve the issue. Other options to resolve severe tooth decay include root canals or dental treatments for gum disease.

Removing Old Metal Fillings

If you have old metal fillings, we can replace them with tooth colored composite or ceramic dental fillings. Dr. Frank uses the Isolite system when replacing metal fillings for optimal safety. The Isolite system allows for the safe removal of mercury amalgams while protecting the throat and tongue.

Replacing old metal fillings with ceramic or composite fillings offers several benefits. They provide you with a more durable restoration that reduces your risk of tooth fracture. Your new dental filling will also offer aesthetic benefits, providing you with a natural looking result that is not noticeable when you smile.

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

The dental fillings we offer are made to last for at least seven to ten years. After that period, it is recommended to have them replaced with new fillings to maintain the health of the tooth. Dental fillings can be worn down or affected by tooth grinding, jaw clenching, and eating hard foods, but with proper oral hygiene and good care, they can last up to twenty years.

Do I Need to Avoid Any Foods and Drinks When I Have Dental Fillings?

Although fillings are strong and made to work just as a natural tooth does, they still pose a risk of becoming damaged, broken, or removed. It is recommended to avoid these foods and beverages when you have dental fillings for at least a week after your procedure, and eat them in moderation afterward:

  • Chewy foods such as gum, jerky, and hard bread
  • Sticky foods such as caramel or toffee
  • Hard foods such as apples, chips, pretzels, and nuts
  • Foods high in sugar that can lead to additional cavities

Are There Any Risks With Dental Fillings?

While inserting dental fillings is a common procedure among many patients, it may pose a few risks such as increased tooth sensitivity and pain surrounding the tooth, however, sensitivity often subsides within a few weeks after your procedure. If you experience any pain or discomfort at any time after your treatment, do not hesitate to contact Dr. DePaola and our team who are always ready to help!

What Are the Benefits of Having Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are a huge benefit to patients who are able to identify early signs of tooth decay in their mouth. These fillings allow the prevention of spreading bacteria further through the mouth and to other teeth. Not only does it help with your overall hygiene, but tooth-colored fillings can even lead to your smile looking brighter than ever!
