How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. They are designed to be as strong as and mimic your natural tooth so that you regain the full functionality of your mouth. In our Hoboken implant dentistry practice, our dentists perform both phases of the implant procedure: the implant and restoration of your tooth.

During the first phase of your treatment, our dentists will place the titanium screw under your gums in your jawbone. This implant will eventually act like your natural tooth root, holding your tooth in place and providing the strength to bite and chew.

After your implant is placed, you will need time to heal. A process called oseo-integration happens. Your jawbone begins to attach itself to and surround the implant. This usually takes between three to six months.

Once your mouth has healed around the dental implant, the dentist will attach an abutment to your implant. This is a small titanium rod that will serve as the inner structure of your new tooth.

The final step is to have a prosthetic tooth constructed out of porcelain. Your new tooth is custom made to match your other teeth and will result in a natural looking smile.
