Cavities are caused by tooth decay, a process that occurs when proper dental hygiene is not maintained. Plaque, a natural bio film, is formed by colonizing bacteria that are already present in your mouth. When you eat or drink, the bacteria in your mouth produce acids which plaque can hold fast to the surface of teeth. Unless removed, these acids will eventually eat their way through your tooth enamel, resulting in cavities, tooth infection, and even gum disease.

The easiest way to avoid cavities is by adopting a good daily oral hygiene routine. Your routine should consist of brushing after every meal and snack, and flossing at least once a day. Make sure you are using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush to maximize cleaning without damaging tooth enamel.

In addition to your at-home routine, you should visit Hoboken dentist Dr. Frank DePaola every six months for professional cleanings and examinations. During your in-office teeth cleanings, Dr. Frank will remove the built up plaque and tartar that could not be removed by daily brushing and flossing.  If cavities are detected during these visits, Dr. Frank can provide prompt treatment to ensure small issues do not become large problems further down the road.
